Poor Working Conditions At Chemical Plant Lead To Explosion And Injury
Mothers are used to picking up messes after their children, whether this means cleaning up the dinner table after a baby knocks over their juice or picking up the vomit after they eat a meal, they are used to getting a little dirty to car for the kids. One thing that a mom can rely on is the fact their baby will have a diaper to help contain their frequent potty breaks, so what happens when diapers are unavailable to purchase, will mothers have to resort to different methods other than disposable diapers?
This just may be the case after a Japanese chemical plant experienced a huge explosion this past weekend. Nippon Shokubai Co. is in the coastal city of Himeji, Japan and is known for their production of acrylic acid, the main chemical that is used to make these much relied on disposable diapers. According to their records, companies all over the world rely on them for acrylic acid; annually Nippon Shikubai produces around 460,000 tons for these various companies.
This accident occurred on Saturday, and it involved very powerful explosions. While 34 employees were recorded as injured from the explosion, it is believed that only one person was killed, a fireman who was a responder to the scene. At this time, it is not known to what the causes are. With the high demands on this company, it is believed that they may have been trying to increase the production in order to make deadlines, because they produce 20% of the world’s supply.
Akira Kurusu, the spokesperson for Nippon Shokubai claims that they have already contacted other acrylic acid manufactures around the world in hopes that they will be able to help with production while things are sorted out and repaired at their plant location, because their customer’s supply of the product is their main concern. While the effects of supply and demand are always a great concern in the global market, the safety of people and workers is of even greater importance.
When a company makes conditions for it’s workers unsafe in order to meet greater production demands, that company becomes responsible for any accidents that befall their employees. Even when the need is pressing, a company needs to put it’s workers’ health and safety first, and if it doesn’t then it is liable.
