Concussions, The NFL, and Workers Comp.
Terry Tautolo a former 49ers linebacker was left homeless after suffering brain damage allegedly caused by concussions sustained during his career with the NFL.
“What this game does to you, people have no clue,” said Tautolo’s former 49er teammate George Visger to CBS.
Visger has also suffered career ending concussions and has since undergone 9 brain surgeries. Visger successfully sued the NFL for workers compensation to cover his medical expenses and advised Tautolo to do the same.
Earlier this year Junior Seau a former San Diego Charger shot himself in the chest. A year earlier Dave Duerson a Bears safety also shot himself in the chest but not before leaving a note requesting that his brain be given to the NFL’s brain bank for testing. His autopsy results showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy a disease associated with depression and dementia all believed to be cause by the head injuries he received during his career.
Its evident when a player has broken a bone or suffered a laceration but the damage that comes from a concussion isnt seen until much later. Visger and others hope to shed some light on the damage cause by these head injuries and prevent more pain and suffering for the players and their loved ones.
