Doctor Fatigue Raises Car Accident Risk
According to a new study from the Mayo Clinic doctor fatigue isn’t just a risk factor for accidents at the hospital, it can be the cause of a car accident later on after long shifts.
Researchers from the Mayo Clinic found that 11 percent of medical interns included in the study reported getting into car accidents while training and 43 percent reported close calls.
Study researcher Dr. Colin West, M.D., Ph.D., who is an internal medicine physician at the Mayo Clinic, said in a statement “The fact that motor vehicle incidents are common among residents brings the issues of resident fatigue, sleepiness and distress to high level . New interventions designed to address both resident fatigue and distress may be needed to promote patient and resident safety.”
It is truly imperative that interns receive protected sleep time for all of our safety. Working as an accident lawyer for over 30 years, I have seen many car accident cases in Riverside. While some of these accidents are unavoidable, the rest are caused by driver error. Be it a young teen driver who lacks the experience behind the wheel, or an experienced driver who suffers a loss of attention, accidents do happen.
Compensation for a person injured as a result of negligence includes medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life. The insurance company of the other driver does not have the accident victim’s best interest in mind. You care about receiving the most amount of money to settle the claim.
